Tomasz Adamek Defeats Bobby Gunn

Strength and Skill of the Pole Too Much For Game Gunn

On July 11th, IBF Cruiserweight Champion Tomasz Adamek successfully defended his crown against the determined but ultimately outclassed Bobby Gunn.

Going into this fight, Tomasz Adamek was the huge favourite. British boxing publication Boxing News called it 'mission impossible' for Gunn, and while he gave it a decent go, he was outclassed from the opening bell.

How Adamek Beat Gunn

In the first round, Adamek took his time and just waited patiently for opportunities to present themselves. This was his time to decrypt the myth of Gunn, which didn't prove to be all that difficult. By the end of the round, Adamek was throwing good, solid combinations which were obviously taking their toll on Gunn.

The second round was most definitely Adamek's as well. He opened up more in this round and the power shots were really flying at the American veteran from all angles. Strangely, Gunn was taunting Adamek as if to say 'hit me more', and the Pole duly obliged.

Credit must be given to Gunn though, he wasn't disheartened by the power and precision of the Pole. The third was arguably as good as it got for Gunn on this occasion as in this round he found some success with the left hook. However, he still didn't do enough to win the round, and even at this stage it looked as if Adamek was going to win.

The fourth and final round of this contest (which was scheduled for twelve) just exhibited more of the same, although at the end of this round, Gunn looked unsteady and Adamek was going in for the kill, so to speak.

After this round finished, Gunn's corner, along with the ringside doctor and the referee decided to call a stop to this bout. They judged that Gunn was taking too much punishment, and while the American was annoyed they pulled him out, he went straight over to Adamek and congratulated him - a great gesture from the loser.

Where Now For Adamek and Gunn?

Bobby Gunn put in a decent shift against Adamek and showed plenty of heart, but ultimately, the American (now 21-4-1 18KOs), doesn't have the class at this level and now he has been found out twice - once by Enzo Maccarinelli and the other time by Adamek. However, he is a good class journeyman, and will hopefully be able to stick around in the game for the next couple of years.

For Adamek (now 38-1 26KOs) this was always just a stay busy fight. He had mixed in much better company than his opponent, and after this win, it is surely onwards and upwards for the Pole. Adamek may look at the possibility of fighting Bernard Hopkins, but the Philiadelphia native has been notoriously pricing himself out of fights recently and this probably isn't a realistic option for him.

However, he may have his eye on the winner of Lebedev vs. Maccarinelli, which takes place in Manchester, England on July 18th. Whoever wins this, this would be a money spinner for Adamek, and he could truly solidify his status as the best cruiserweight in the world with a victory over one of the above.
