Super Six Super Middleweight Torunament

Showtime Announce Revolutionary Tournament

The American TV station Showtime have announced a tournament which could change the face of boxing forever.

In this tournament, six of the very best super middleweights around the world will compete to determine the best fighter in that weight of this generation.

Who Is in the 'Super Six' Tournament?

Carl 'the Cobra' Froch, an undefeated fighter from Nottingham, England with heavy hands is the favourite to take the tournament currently. After his amazing comeback against Jermain Taylor in April, you can't count Froch out of anything. He has definitely got the potential to win this.

Mikkel Kessler is also in the tournament. A fighter of the highest class, the Dane's only loss is to Joe Calzaghe, who finished up undefeated, so there isn't a great amount of shame in that. He is very confident he can take this tournament.

Jermain 'Bad Intentions' Taylor is also involved in the 'Super Six'. He will be looking to avenge his loss against Carl Froch in this, and return to the form which saw him defeat the legendary Bernard Hopkins twice.

Moving up in weight is the undefeated German, Arthur Abraham. He has seemingly got no more big challenges at middleweight (apart from Kelly Pavlik, with whom he couldn't agree a deal) and it had been well documented that he had been struggling to make the middleweight limit for a while. This could be the perfect time for Arthur to hit the mainstream.

Andre 'S.O.G' Ward is also in this tournament. While he is an outsider, if he can use his boxing skills just like he did against Edison Miranda, then he has a chance of pulling some victories off.

Andre Dirrell is the final participant in the tournament. He is another outsider, but he is a banger so he will always have a puncher's chance.

How Will the Super Middleweight Tournament Work?

As of yet, it is not definite. However, what has been released is that every fighter will at first have three fights. In these, he will get 3 points for a knockout, 2 points for a judges decision and 1 point for a draw.

The four fighters with the most points after these fights then move onto the semi-finals, and the winners of these will face off in the final. It has not been mentioned whether there will be a third place playoff as of yet.

Why Is This Tournament So Good?

The best thing about this tournament is that for the first time in years, the best will be fighting the best. Furthermore, these fighters make for great fights; you couldn't make one boring fight with these guys making this arguably the most entertaining concept in boxing ever.

Other divisions may follow suit as well. Imagine a welterweight tournament with the likes of Cotto, Margarito and Mosley in it. This is the blueprint for how boxing should be run, and is a truly excellent idea.

Who Is Fighting First?

Today, the first round fights have been announced. On the 17th October, Carl Froch will fight Andre Dirrell and Jermain Taylor will fight Arthur Abraham. Mikkel Kessler will have to fight at a later date, because he is tied up with a mandatory to keep his WBA belt, but the 17th October is a stacked enough night the way it is.

This is quite possibly as good as boxing will get in the coming years. To get all of the top guys in one division fighting is truly amazing, and it will be very interesting to see who will prevail.
